SAFe community helps make first SAFe Summit a resounding success!

Over 400 attendees from 17 countries trekked to Colorado for the first SAFe Summit Oct. 25-28, making it the largest gathering of its kind to focus exclusively on SAFe and its community of practice. The ‘big tent’ event was designed for everyone engaged with SAFe—partners, practitioners, instructors, consultants, and enterprise business leaders—and served up a wide range of topics and trainings that reflected the diversity of its audience. The feedback from attendees was loud and clear to make this an annual event, so stay tuned for an announcement on next year's dates and location by joining the Summit email list.

New! SAFe 4.0 Scrum Master course (SSM)
This core certification completes the SAFe Scrum Master learning path

Scrum Masters are critical players in a Lean-Agile enterprise and can make all the difference when it comes to an effective SAFe implementation. To that end, we are proud to announce the addition of a new course: SAFe 4.0 Scrum Master. This course rounds out a full team curriculum of training including our popular SAFe 4.0 for Teams and SAFe 4.0 Product Manager/Product Owner courses. In addition, for those looking to significantly advance their Scrum Master skills, we recently introduced the SAFe 4.0 Advanced Scrum Master course. SAFe 4.0 Scrum Master serves as the prerequisite for this advanced course. View public classes and learn more about the course at

Essential SAFe under construction

Earlier this year, a simpler view of SAFe—Essential SAFe—was spiked as a concept and was a hot session topic at the Summit. Essential SAFe is a set of minimal practices without which SAFe might no longer be 'safe.' It can provide guidance for organizations that are customizing SAFe but don't want to stray so far that they lose its advantages. It can also act as an easy entry point for organizations that aren't ready for full-on SAFe, but want to start practicing and getting the benefits as soon as possible.

We're processing all the feedback we received, and are taking Essential SAFe back into development so that we can release it as a fully-supported product in the coming months. Until then, you can read more about it here.

End of life for SAFe 3.0 site and courseware

On December 30, 2016, all SAFe 3.0 courseware and materials will be retired. As a result, the SAFe 3.0 website will be inaccessible (it will redirect to the 4.0 Framework site), and 3.0 courseware will no longer be available. SAFe 4.0 is backwards compatible with 3.0, so the majority of 3.0 features that you love will still persist in SAFe 4.0. Learn about all the 4.0 courses at

Your favorite 3.0 courses are being replaced with courses that better support the benefits that can be gained with SAFe 4.0:

The first SAFe novel gets rave reviews

"Yakyma nails it! ... with Alex's book, we see a well written story showing how it's done, what challenges you will face and how to overcome them. If you are looking for the Agility Playbook—here it is. Loved this book!"
—Amazon reviewer

Written by SAFe Fellow, Alex Yakyma, and based on dozens of real examples, The Rollout is about leadership and building a Lean-Agile Enterprise with SAFe. It  provides a war chest of tools and techniques every change agent and Lean-Agile leader can use to succeed with their SAFe implementation.

Tribal Unity: a story from the trenches about the power of culture

"Every aspiring Lean-Agile enterprise can be no better than the culture that evolves to support it. Em does a great job of describing how that culture can be fostered directly with the 'team-of-agile-teams,' the essential building block of enterprise agility."
—Dean Leffingwell, creator of SAFe

Written by SPCT, Em Campbell-Pretty, Tribal Unity is a real-world practical guide for leaders committed to making their organization a great place to work. Based on the true story of how one inspiring leader transformed a highly toxic organizational culture into an internationally recognized case study of success, Tribal Unity shares proven patterns that are revolutionizing the way teams of teams connect and perform.

As an enterprise deploying SAFe, you instinctively know that value streams are at the heart of delivering strategic value and creating a competitive advantage. The actual process of identifying, mapping, and leveraging value streams in your software delivery process is another matter entirely. Video: Schroders PI Planning Workshop

"It’s been incredible to see a diverse group of people come together—who didn’t know each other—form into teams, and actually generate a huge amount of planning and output in a very short period of time."
—PI Planning participant

One of the best examples we've seen, this 3.5 minute video captures the energy and ideas flowing at an actual Program Increment (PI) planning event held at Schroders, a British multinational asset management company. It's a great tool for introducing the concept to SAFe newbies, or organizations considering SAFe.

Biopharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca realizes substantial financial benefits from SAFe

We’re delivering faster with greater quality and less manpower—resulting in substantial financial benefits from the teams that have adopted Agile to date. We expect to double our adoption of Agile this year.”
—Patty Sheehan, AZ Agile Cultural Change Lead and Coach

AstraZeneca is 18 months into a multi-year transition to Agile. With the adoption of SAFe and the support of Gold Partner, PA Consulting, a substantial transformation has already occurred. Twenty large teams have adopted Agile, and over 1000 staff have been trained and supported through a robust coaching regime. More importantly, Agile maturity has increased rapidly over the year with strong adoption in each area of the business.
